Like all people who are engaged in self-development, I’ve been thinking about how a limited amount of time allocated to it to get the maximum benefit for the brain. Let us remember the Pareto principle and apply it to self: what mental activity is 20% of the time and still gives 80% of the results, in the case of cognitive development? The issue is extremely complex, because the modern world offers a lot of options: you can view training videos on Youtube, solve logical problems, use the app to take courses at different sites. But time is never enough, so again and again there is the same problem as a question: what is to spend time to result was the maximum?
For myself, I found three answers, which I try to stick to it every day:
Rewriting the books and materials.
Exercises for the brain.
On the exercise diary, and we’ll talk in future articles, but now it’s about rewriting.
You’ve probably read a lot of books on self-development. Perhaps this number even exceeded a hundred, but not so simple, and there is no precise amount depending on the quality. The more books you read, the more questions and the confused situation. This does not mean that they do not need to read, because how else can you learn about what is really important.
Right now, make a list of ten books that have influenced you the most. It is advisable to cover several areas. For example, here is my list:
Dale Carnegie “How to Win Friends and Influence People” (communication).
Dale Carnegie “How to Stop Worrying” (psychological resistance).
Dale Carnegie “How to develop self-confidence” (certainty).
Dan Waldschmidt “Be the best version of myself” (motivation, and a set of affirmations).
Carmine Gallo “iPrezentatsiya” (planning).
Brian Tracy “Efficient time management” (time management).
Alex Cornell “Again a creative crisis?” (Inspiration).
Frans Johansson “The Medici Effect” (art theory).
Michael Mikhalko “Mind Games” (mind: cognitive and creative abilities).
Stephen Covey’s “Seven highly effective people skills” (skills and qualities).
Your list may differ significantly from mine, because each person can have their own opinion as to what to focus on.
Why rewrite the book?
Concentration. If you paid rewrite the book for 3 hours and completely surrender to this process, it will feel the peace of mind that allows to think about one thing. Chaotic thoughts in everyday life are killing us, while rewriting the brakes this mess and allows you to be thoughtful.
Memory. It’s no secret, we all know about the benefits of recording the information, but almost none of this advice does not enjoy. Every day we consume a huge amount of information from which it can not bear anything useful, instead of focusing on the most important. Development of memory requires awareness and care and can not escape from this principle: it does not cheat and do not change.
Status flow. Csikszentmihalyi has formed seven principles by which it occurs, but the key is the many hours of concentration on one thing. Why flow occurs so rarely? We are always something distracting. And if it’s not the surroundings, you own thoughts. Rewriting is to streamline and tranquility. To some extent, this meditative process. Am I missing three days of this practice for several hours, to enter into this state.
Motility. It is difficult to explain scientifically, but I have long realized that the process of hand movements on the paper itself has a large advantage. No video even simply reading and not lead to such an effect as rewriting. For example, video is a passive process, because if you understand what has been said or shown, and no, it continues. How many times have you stopped the video clip on YouTube, to consider the information? This does not happen even with the reading of the book. Motor skills (and, consequently, the speed of his thoughts) you can control. Want to speed up – please pause – on health.
Compliance with the Pareto principle. I noticed that the ten books shall not be so many good read for me, as the working of a single. However, it certainly should be well written and carry a large number of tips and practical exercises. For example, Carnegie book “How to Stop Worrying” provides 50 tips and beautiful if you follow at least a few of them, you will achieve excellent results. This does not mean that nothing more should be read. Read, however, as soon realized the importance of the information provided, enter it in the list, and after some time back.
